Usually, the outermost layer of the glass lens is made of magnesium fluoride with a refractive index of 1.38, which is greater than 250 degrees. Under the circumstance, the magnesium fluoride film layer is very strong, and it is the lowest refractive index film material currently available. The resin glasses can only be heated to 80 degrees, so a higher refractive index film material must be selected. Nowadays, silica film materials with a refractive index of 1.46 are mainly used in the market. This is why glass lenses have better transmittance than resin lenses. At present, in the United States, the Japanese resin sheet market share is more than 90%, and Europe is about 50%. In the less developed countries, glass lenses still occupy most of the market. At present, the Chinese glasses market is transitioning from glass to resin.

Although the resin has poor plateability, its advantages are also very prominent: it is not fragile, light, and easy to process. Of course, its defects are also well known: the lens is soft and the scratch resistance is low. However, due to the increasingly recent advancement of optical technology, these shortcomings can be compensated by appropriate coating processes.

Although the coating itself and the resin lens have some contradictions that are difficult to reconcile, such as thermal sensitivity and thermal expansion coefficient, these properties make the substrate and the film have a very large internal stress, and the film is fragile. In order to get the best film, the current resin coating is composed of four parts, the cross-linked layer is hardened (if immersion hardening is used, the cross-linking and hardening can be completed at one time), antireflection film, and waterproof film.
